Bong Functionality
The science behind bongs’ highly sought-after functionality is as simple as the smoking process itself. As the bowl is lit and the material begins to break down from a solid to smoke. It travels via a pathway referred to as the downstream.
A typical downstream design features a single hole in the bottom of the tube. The connects to the inside of the bong base/water reservoir breaking down the gas into smaller pockets.
In recent years glassblowers and manufacturers have favored a design. Which multiple slits are placed in the sides of the base of the downstream in addition to the main hole. A small pocket to more effectively cool the smoke as it travels through the water.
Once the water has effectively cooled the smoke-filled air pockets. This allows for a breakthrough to the surface making the smoke travel through the neck of the bong and into the user’s lungs.
Often times bongs also have a section referred to as the ice pinch. It allows users to add ice cubes into the neck of the bong without compromising functionality or design while effectively cooling. The smokes in addition to the water as it travels to the user.
